The ALA has undertaken several user surveys since its inception in 2008. These ranged from user needs analyses, functional reviews, user polls and user satisfaction surveys. Following each of these surveys, successive improvements to the ALA’s web presence and functionality have been made.
There are still several key areas that our stakeholders have identified that can be improved by refining our user experience and user interface (UX/UI). Findings from these previous surveys were consolidated with the results of an additional stakeholder engagement in a report summarising the perceptions of our users. This report forms the basis of the UX/UI project. Although stakeholder’s perceptions of the ALA’s web presence are largely positive, the findings showed that users have difficulties navigating the different ALA services.
We have engaged Icon Agency to work with our team to assist with establishing our UX/UI Practice and embedding it in the ALA including upskilling staff and improving UX/UI governance and workflows. Initial work to test the implementation of the new UX/UI practice will be performed with two of the ALA’s most visited pages – the ALA home page and the ALA species pages, also known as Biodiversity Information Explorer (BIE) – with a view to transitioning this work to an ongoing business as usual activity.
Work on this project commenced in August 2023 for an initial term until June 2025.
