Working at the ALA

The ALA is ‘big data’ for biodiversity science and decision-making. We bring together millions of plant and animal sightings as well as environmental data like rainfall and temperature in one place to be searched and analysed using cutting-edge digital tools.

Passionate about improving biodiversity outcomes, we take pride in the many ways our work is used by over 140,000 users including researchers, governments, industry and community groups.

Tech and innovation

Every day is dynamic when you’re working with cutting-edge infrastructure. We develop it in-house, using and producing open-source software and tools to aggregate Australian biodiversity data from a variety of providers. Our technology stack is reused by over 25 countries.

We are funded under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), hosted by CSIRO, and are the Australian node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Culture and environment

A team that truly helps each other out, we championed flexible working arrangements even before it was commonplace and thrive in a culture of innovation.

As part of CSIRO, we strive for a great workplace and culture. This includes:

  • Professional development opportunities
  • Balance for work and life
  • A healthy environment
